Defending the Viennese Neustadt

English:
On August 13th 1943, a Friday, accomplished the IXTH bomber command the operation “Juggler”, the attack on Viennese Neustadt.

The German leadership had assumed that it will soon past be with the peace in the southeast area, because on August 1st 1943 an attack with 179 B-24D started in Bengasi/Libya, had taken place at the oil plants in Ploesti.

Therefore the 44th, 93rd and 389th Bombardment Group of the 8th air Force and the 98th and 376th Bombardment Group of the 9th air Force had been pulled together.

The attack had been a success, but an expensive - it was flown in the low altitude and was totally surprisingly. But at the flight of the target the defenders did bloody work with German Me-109 and Romanian IAR-80A under the American bombers.

Due to 179 bombers 14 leaved from the attack with technical problems. 43 had been shot, 15 had to make an emergency landing, 8 fleed with damage into Turkey and were interned and only 99 landed again in Bengasi - 56 of them with heavy bombardment damage and victims among the crews.

So for the Neustadt flight only 83 instead of the intended 120 bombers on August 13th were operationally - compared to 1,000 bombers which attacks the north German cities leaving them in flame seas and rubble deserts was this only a little drop on a stone

Between 07:15 and 07:30 local time the bombers took off, but 22 machines braked short after the start conclusion - they had to turn around because of technical problems. Thus 61 B-24D were flying the 1,300 km and about four and one-half hours to Viennese Neustadt. The flight path wents over the Mediterranean, Italy, the Adria, Yugoslavia and Hungary to the disk lake (Plattensee).

The lake was the way mark used to get turn around direction to the new settler lake (Neusiedler See). From there then directly to Viennese Neustadt where with a 4/10
